We are living through a moment when tremendous change is taking place at the intersection of race, religion and sexuality, which has significant implications for activists, scholars and religious leaders alike.  Are the Gods Afraid of Black Sexuality? will bring scholars and practitioners together to explore a range of historical and contemporary phenomena associated with religion, race and sexuality, as they coalesce and converge.  The task before us is not to address a single problem, but rather to unearth and engage with the often-unstated normative claims surrounding race and religion, and gender and sex, that continue to inform our work as scholars and our lives as people within the US and the African Diaspora. Topics to be explored include: Media, Markets and the Making of Black Sexualities; Religious Narratives of Black Sexuality; Sexual Politics of Black Sacred Music; and Captive Bodies and the Policing of Respectability.

Are the Gods Afraid of Black Sexuality?  is organized by the Institute for Research in African American Studies (IRAAS,) in partnership with the Center on African American Religion, Sexual Politics and Social Justice (CARSS); and co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost; Institute for Religion, Culture and Public Life (IRCPL); University Chaplain’s Office; Institute for Research on Women, Gender and Sexuality (IRWGS); Office of Government and Community Affairs; Center for the Study of Ethnicity and Race (CSER); Center for Gender and Sexuality Law; Barnard Center for Research on Women (BCRW); and Union Theological Seminary.  Support for this conference is also being provided by the Arcus Foundation, the Carpenter Foundation, and the Ford Foundation.
