Recognition in Religion and Theology

November 16 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Recognition in Religion and Theology: Philosophical, Historical, and Literary Perspectives

A group of Finnish scholars has been working on a six-year project at the University of Helsinki on Reason and Religious Recognition.  They have been investigating the concept of social recognition and its implications for the study of religion. After a brief overview, they will introduce selected themes from individual and joint research projects and discuss the challenges of combining historical discussions of religious identities with contemporary systematic explorations of recognition, as well as the critical issue of “recognition-failure” in theodicies offered as responses to the problem of evil, discussed since the Book of Job. The final paper on theodicies as failures of recognition will also introduce Sari Kivistö’s and Sami Pihlström’s recent joint book, Kantian Antitheodicy (Palgrave Macmillan, 2016).
